I've been running The PDA Guy at its own domain for a few years now. It's where I shoot the breeze about those funky little devices that nerds hid in their pockets.

Today, PDAs are everywhere - restaurants, parking inspectors, boardrooms. Today, they're called smartphones and everyone's got one. I'll tell you what's hot, what's new and give you lowdown on what's coming.

Is Microsoft buying RIM?

The rumours are flying about the web. Is Microsoft trying to buy RIM - the company that brought us the BlackBerry? I don't get it? Microsoft is a software company that makes a mobile OS (Windows Mobile) and a backend push email system (Exchange). Buy purchasing RIM they get a mobile OS, push email and hardware.

Personally, I'd rather see Microsoft putting its resources towards Vista SP1, cleaning up the consumer confusion casued by the myraid of Office and Vista versions and getting the Zune to be a viable iPod competitor.

This seems to be a bad deal for all of us. Part of RIM's appeal is that it ISN'T Microsoft and gives the market an alternative to WIndows Mobile/Exchange. I hope this is just a rumour and that it's confined to the scrap heap along with Apple buying Palm.
